It’s Official — You’re Working Too Hard

Over­work is a seri­ous health issue.

The Ger­man Fed­er­al Insti­tute for Occu­pa­tion­al Safe­ty and Health has con­duct­ed a num­ber of health stud­ies and con­clud­ed that long work hours are direct­ly cor­re­lat­ed with sleep dis­tur­bances, back pain, and heart prob­lems.  Health effects of over­work­ing can also include headaches, extreme fatigue, depres­sion, con­tin­u­ous irri­tabil­i­ty, and even pan­ic attacks.

Work­ing too many hours is a dou­ble wham­my — not only is it mak­ing you sick­er, it’s also cut­ting into your social life, which is an impor­tant con­trib­u­tor to good health.

At the same time, over­worked employ­ees are more like­ly to make mis­takes, and can feel angry at their employ­er, their boss, or at co-work­ers who seem less busy than they are.

Sad­ly, over­work­ing is becom­ing the norm.  In recent sur­veys, a third to a half of all employed peo­ple report­ed that they were deal­ing with issues of over­work­ing, and those num­bers have prob­a­bly got­ten worse since the sur­veys were con­duct­ed.
